Why Choose Odakyu Line Apartments?
The Odakyu Odawara Line is the main line of Odakyu Electric Railway. It starts at Shinjuku and runs southwest through Setagaya, Kawasaki, Machida and central Kanagawa to Odawara. The whole line opened in 1927.
Renters choose Odakyu Line apartments for three main reasons.
Many people want to live here. In a 2024 LIFULL HOME’S ranking, the Odakyu Odawara Line was the private railway in the Tokyo area with the most rental inquiries. Hon-Atsugi was its most popular station.
Direct routes into central Tokyo. The line ends at Shinjuku, one of Tokyo’s biggest hubs. At Yoyogi-Uehara, some trains continue onto the Tokyo Metro Chiyoda Line. Omotesando, Kasumigaseki and Otemachi are on that line.
A wide price range on one line. You can pay ¥126,900 for a studio in Shimokitazawa or about half that in Sagami-Ono. Both are rapid express stops. You choose how much commute time to trade for lower rent.

Source: LIFULL HOME’S, average rent for studio, 1K and 1DK apartments within a 10-minute walk, excluding management fees, checked October 2026. Distances and train stops from Odakyu timetable data as listed on Wikipedia. Some semi-express trains stop at Ikuta, Yomiuri-Land-mae, Yurigaoka and stations between Kakio and Atsugi on weekday evenings only.
Three patterns stand out in the data.
The Setagaya border. Kitami, the last Setagaya stop, averages ¥100,200. Komae, one stop further, averages ¥73,600. That is about ¥26,600 less for the next station on the same line.
Machida vs Sagami-Ono. These two rapid express stops are only 1.5 km apart. Sagami-Ono costs about ¥23,500 less per month.
Express stops are not always the most expensive. Seijogakuen-mae is an express stop, yet it averages ¥14,600 less than Chitose-Funabashi, a semi-express stop next door.

What Are the Downsides of Odakyu Line Apartments?
Rush hours are busy. The busiest section runs at 146% of capacity in the weekday morning peak.
Many stations get local trains only. Express trains do not stop at Sobudai-mae, Zama, Odakyu-Sagamihara, Kakio or Tsurukawa. Check the timetable before you sign a lease.
Atsugi is not in Atsugi. Atsugi Station is in Ebina City. The busy town center is at Hon-Atsugi. Check the station name carefully on listings.
The Romancecar costs extra. Every seat is reserved, and you pay a limited express fee on top of the fare.
How to Rent an Odakyu Line Apartment as a Foreigner
- Set your budget. Plan for rent plus about four to six months of rent in move-in costs.
- Choose your commute limit. Decide how many minutes to Shinjuku you accept, then pick two or three stations from the table.
- Check walking time. Many listings are 10 to 15 minutes from the station. Our guide on walking distance to train stations explains what each minute means.
- Prepare documents. You will usually need your residence card, passport, proof of income and a Japanese phone number. SOFA personnel use different documents, as our Camp Zama guide explains.
- Use a guarantor company. Most landlords require one. Arealty can help you choose a company that accepts foreign tenants.
- Visit or request a video tour. Check the street at night, the nearest supermarket and the route to the station.
